Product Details

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are naturally occurring oligosaccharides found in plants such as onions, chicory, garlic, asparagus, bananas, and artichokes, among others. They consist of linear chains of fructose units linked by beta (2-1) bonds, with the number of fructose units ranging from 2 to 60, often terminating in a glucose unit.

Dietary FOS are not broken down by small intestinal glycosidases, allowing them to reach the cecum structurally unchanged. There, they are metabolized by intestinal microflora, producing short-chain carboxylic acids, L-lactate, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and other metabolites.

FOS have several interesting properties: they have a low sweetness intensity, are calorie-free, non-cariogenic, and classified as soluble dietary fiber. Additionally, FOS provide significant physiological benefits, including low carcinogenicity, a prebiotic effect, improved mineral absorption, and reduced levels of serum cholesterol, triacylglycerols, and phospholipids.

Due to their prebiotic effects, FOS are increasingly being included in food products and infant formulas, as they stimulate the growth of beneficial intestinal microflora. Consumption of FOS increases fecal bulk and the frequency of bowel movements. A daily dose of 4-15 grams is effective for reducing constipation among healthy individuals, a common issue in modern society, as well as in newborns during their first months of life.
